Asthma is a common condition that affects your breathing. It cannot currently be cured, but if it's well treated you should not have problems with symptoms.

A blood test is when a sample of blood is taken for testing in a laboratory. Blood tests have a wide range of uses and are one of the most common types of medical test. For example, a blood test can be used to:

• assess your general state of health
• confirm the presence of a bacterial or viral infection
• see how well certain organs, such as the liver and kidneys, are functioning

A blood test usually involves the phlebotomist taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm, the usual place for a sample is the inside of the elbow or wrist, where the veins are relatively close to the surface. Blood samples from children are most commonly taken from the back of the hand. The child’s hand will be anaesthetised (numbed) with a special cream before the sample is taken.

Women aged between 24 and 64 should have a cervical screening every 3 to 5 years to help prevent cervical cancer. The screening is quick and painless and can be done here in the practice.

If you are aged over 24 and have never had a smear test, or if it has been more than 3 to 5 years since your last screening, you should arrange an appointment with our Practice Nurse. You should not have the test while you are having a period or in the 4 days before or after your period as this can affect the sample.

As your GP surgery, we play a key role in managing your long-term condition. Our goal is to provide holistic, personal, and high-quality care by collaborating with you and community specialists.

Long-term conditions are chronic diseases that currently have no cure and require ongoing management. Every patient with a long-term condition should have an annual review, or ‘health MOT.’ This begins with a healthcare assistant or nurse taking a blood sample, checking blood pressure, and updating health data.

A GP will then review your results alongside your medical history and medications to discuss potential improvements in your health management, which may include health advice, medication adjustments, or referrals. The second appointment, also with a healthcare assistant or nurse, will focus on discussing the GP’s recommendations. If you have multiple conditions, we aim to schedule this second appointment with a nurse or GP.

NHS Health checks - A Health MOT If you're aged between 40 and 74 and haven't already been diagnosed with vascular disease or  treated for certain risk factors such as high blood pressure or cholesterol, you will be invited for a health check every five years. From April 2013, responsibility for the NHS Health Check programme  moved to your local authority, and will be carried out by your Practice which will invite everyone who is eligible over a five-year rolling cycle.

If you need an X-ray, the clinician will do a referral and advise you what happens next. If you have been referred for an X-ray, you will need to book an appointment at one of the local hospitals.

An X-ray is a widely used diagnostic test to examine the inside of the body. X-rays are a very effective way of detecting problems with bones, such as fractures. They can also often identify problems with soft tissue, such as pneumonia or breast cancer. If you have a X-ray, you will be asked to lie on a table or stand against a surface so that the part of your body being X-rayed is between the X-ray tube and the photographic plate. An X-ray is usually carried out by a radiographer, a healthcare professional who specialises in using imaging technology, such as X-rays and ultrasound scanners.
